Abstract
In 77 dogs with prostatic disease the clinical signs and the accuracy of cytological examination of specimens obtained by fine needle aspiration biopsy and catheter suction biopsy were assessed for diagnosing prostatic carcinoma. The clinical signs appeared to be diverse and non-specific for the different causes of prostatic disease. Both aspiration biopsy and catheter biopsy technique had a moderate sensitivity for detecting prostatic carcinoma (67 % each). However, both techniques had a very high specificity (98 %). It was concluded that cytological examination of specimens of both biopsy techniques is a very accurate diagnostic procedure for the diagnosis of prostatic cancer in the dog.
