    Abstract

In this paper on youth languages, three major related topics are addressed.
    The basic questions are:
    1. What are youth languages?
    2. What is the meaning of the urban background that youth languages usually
    are situated in?
    3. What forms of youth languages are studied in the Netherlands and why is
this increasingly based on written Internet data?
In an attempt to answer the first question, the term youth language itself is
discussed, accompanied by examples from a variety of practices from Europe
and beyond. In order to answer the second question on the role of the city, insights from urban geography on space and relations are presented and discussed.
In the final part, the third question is addressed by focusing on Dutch
Straattaal and to a lesser degree, Moroccan Flavored Dutch (MFD). An analysis
of the use of written Straattaal and metalinguistic commentary expressing attitudes towards it, is presented. I will argue that the Internet can provide useful
data for an analysis of youth languages.
