Jan Pieter Beetz has been a postdoctoral researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and recently started as a Lecturer in Politics at the Radboud University Nijmegen and in Philosophy at Leiden University. Luigi Corrias is Assistant Professor of Legal Theory at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Ben Crum is Professor of Political Science at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. This special issue is the result of two workshops that were held at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam under the auspices of the Amsterdam Centre for Contemporary European Studies (ACCESS EUROPE), the first on 4 and 5 June 2015 and the second on 1 and 2 June 2017. We thank ACCESS EUROPE and Wiley Blackwell for the financial support that made these workshops possible, and Agustín Menéndez for his guidance in the editorial process. Above all, we are very grateful to our authors and all other participants of the two events for their active involvement in the project, which extends far beyond what we are able to publish here and on which we hope to continue to build in the future.
