Abstract
In this article I conclude that the dream of those innocent and all-inspiring historical women's struggles that were passed on from mother to daughter is an illusion. Whilst the new perspective on the history of the women's movement proposed above, with a focus on the way gender is invoked as political discourse, does not offer up a feast of recognition, however, it does offer space to reflect upon the choices that historians make. I show that the Dutch women's movement also involved bourgeois and colonial ideas that divided the world into people with and without history. Paying attention to the choices—both 'right' and 'wrong' from the historians perspective —that feminists made, allow me and, hopefully, my readers to be more aware of the fact that standing up for women and women's rights has many faces and is never innocent.
