Abstract

The study analyses start-up processes in the alternative energy and information technology sectors. The findings reveal that start-ups do not follow a uniform process. Thus, a total of four different types of start-up processes were identified. The foundation processes differ regarding whether and when entrepreneurs started to write a business plan. The speed of the individual process steps is primarily determined by the business models degree of innovation. Consequently, start-ups with radical innovations, for example, take almost 16 months longer to develop a viable business model than imitative ones. In comparison to the US, start-up processes in Germany are significantly shorter.
