Abstract

As a coastal state with more than 3200 kilometers of coastline along the South China Sea, one of the busiest sea routes in the world, Vietnam has strategic interests in maintaining freedom of navigation. Maritime safety and security in the South China Sea play an essential role in securing the sea lanes of communication and protecting trading activities for many countries, including Japan, South Korea, and China. This is a common interest shared by not only littoral states, but also other sea users. To regulate navigation, states surrounding the South China Sea, including Vietnam, have enacted laws to govern the rights and obligations related to the navigation of all vessels in their maritime zones. This chapter will analyze the laws and regulations of Vietnam concerning navigation of foreign vessels in its maritime zones.
