Abstract
Knowledge about the structure of texts contributes positively to text comprehension. Still, text structure receives little attention in Dutch primary education. To change this, it is crucial that teachers acquire sufficient knowledge about text structure, but the current Knowledge Base for Dutch Language Education falls short here. Therefore, we developed a series of educational videos and explored the opportunities and obstacles of using these materials in pre-service teacher training. We examined students' prior knowledge about text structure, their appreciation of the videos, and the extent to which the videos contributed to increasing students' knowledge and expertise in analyzing texts for their own reading lessons. Prior knowledge about text structure was found to be low, which calls for more attention to this topic within teacher training. Students appreciated the videos and provided useful feedback to improve the materials. Based on the knowledge test results no unequivocal statement can be made about an increase in students' knowledge. However, watching the videos positively affected their ability to determine the structures of texts.
