Abstract
In my talk I will discuss the characteristics, use and status of urban youth vernaculars in
the Netherlands. I will go into their functional restrictions and linguistic characteristics. I
will make a comparison, mainly linguistically, with other countries in Europe and beyond
(Kenya and South Africa). I will briefly discuss the status and position of these urban
vernaculars beside other language contact phenomena such as pidgins, creoles and mixed
languages.
