Abstract
In this collection of essays we wish to put forward the notion of urban interfaces as a lens through which we can explore how situated media, art, and performances constitute and construct contemporary urban public spaces.
In today’s mediatized cities the notion of public space is in urgent need of being reexamined. Many cities throughout the word face frictions in and about public spaces, like privatization and commercialization, shifts in ownership (legal and perceived), processes of in- and exclusion, and various personalization practices afforded by mobile technologies. Defining such frictions is a struggle over ‘the right to the city’ (Harvey 2008; Lefebvre 1996; Mitchell 2003). Who owns, defines and shapes urban public space? What are its resources? Who uses these resources and under what conditions?
