Abstract

This paper reports on trends in sports participation in the Netherlands between 1979 and 2007. Data from the 'Additional facility use survey' and 'Survey integration minorities' were analysed. Sports participation has risen strongly over the past thirty years: 78% of the population participated in sport at least once in 2007, which is a strong increase compared to 1979. Moreover, 65% of the population took part in sport at least 12 times per year in 2007. Participation in sport by members of non-western ethnic minorities and by the over65s, people with a lower socioeconomic position and people with impairments has grown in the last ten years, but is still much lower than among the population as a whole. Specific promotion of sports participation should be aimed at these groups.
