title = "Translation and Transmission of Texts in Medieval Europe: Two Aspects of Translatio",
abstract = "The paper examines medieval attitudes towards the two meanings of the word translatio: translation and transmission, focusing primarily on medieval French, Welsh and English texts. Through an analysis of paratexts belonging to medieval translated texts the paper presents what is known of medieval translators{\textquoteright} attitudes towards their trade and products. The paper builds on previous research on medieval translation practices and proposes that in the medieval European understanding of “translation”, linguistic transference was only one aspect of a greater whole. References to “translation” in these texts, it is argued, should be understood as references to “transmission”. ",
