Abstract
Recent changes in Dutch society have strongly influenced the way young people live their lives. To be successful on the labour market, young people have to study for a longer period. In the Netherlands, it is compulsory to remain at school till the age of 18 years. After secondary school a large number of students continue in higher education. This results, on the one hand, in young people remaining longer at home and being financially more dependent on their parents. On the other hand, young people experience a greater sense of autonomy in modern society, like having their own space at home, enjoying a more equal standing with their parents and choosing their own lifestyle.
