Abstract

In-situ X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) experiments with a 17.5 wt% V2O5 on Al2O3 catalyst showed that the supported V2O5 phase mainly consists of monomeric tetrahedral (Al-O)3-V=O units after dehydration in air at 623 K. The vanadium oxide phase was reduced in CO/He at 723 K. It was found that the reduced species migrate into the γ-Al2O3 lattice, where the V3+ species are positioned at an Al3+ octahedral position. This migration process appears to be reversible, i.e. the (Al-O)3-V=O units are thus restored by reoxidation.
