The practical self-understanding of athletes and the future of sport

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterAcademicpeer-review

Abstract

In this contribution some arguments are developed against the acceptance of Performance-Enhancing Drugs (PED’s) in future sports practices. Building on the practice-conception of the British philosopher Oakeshott, meaningful sport is related to the self-understanding of athletes, which hinges on their familiarity with the use of tools, including their bodies, in meeting the challenges of a particular sport, both as a community of athletes and as individuals who are involved in self-disclosure.
