Abstract
Nudges are subtle physical or social cues in the environment that trigger desired behaviors without limiting freedom of choice. They have been shown to successfully promote healthy and sustainable food choices, environmentally-friendly behavior, retirement saving, and charity and organ donation, among others. By targeting automatic decision-making processes, such as heuristics, nudges help people make healthier choices when faced with self-control conflicts, while requiring minimal processing effort. As such, nudges are optimal interventions to help people attain their goals, especially when cognitive resources and self-control are low.
