Abstract

Taking examples from sketches and other popular visual media of the nineteenth century – series of etches, catchpenny prints, cabinet cards and advertising trade cards – the author offers a diachronic comparison of the “Dutch national type” by elaborating on the changing functions of categories and illustrations. These changes at the beginning of the nineteenth century, so the thesis, provided the preconditions for understanding an illustration as representation of a national type. In this paper, the author limited herself to images of the Netherlands and the Dutch.
