For my work on birds, I have been much inspired by workshops and a summer school of the TECT (The Evolution of Cooperation and Trading) program and within that program the COCOR (Cooperation in Corvids) project, which were all organized by Ronald No?. Apart from inspiring me, these meetings were also the birthplace of many of the contacts that lead to collaborative efforts and this special issue. Therefore, I want to take this opportunity to specifically thank Ronald. Of course, I also want to thank all contributors to this special issue without whom it would not have happened. Additionally, I would like to thank Thomas Bugnyar for past and ongoing inspiring discussions, and Liesbeth Sterck for her critical reading of this editorial. I would also like to acknowledge the editorial team of Ethology for their help with the issue, and in particular Wolfgang Goymann, Jutta Schneider, Emma Jones, Tom Hunter, and Raevee Nonan. Finally, I am very grateful to the Ethologische Gesellschaft for awarding me the Tinbergen Award, and to Wiley/Ethology for subsequently giving me the opportunity to edit this special issue.
