Abstract
Stimulated emission of phonons resonant with the optically pumped Zeeman-split E(2E) levels is observed in ruby at 1.5 K. Under suitable conditions, the phonon occupation number exhibits a beat as a function of time, which signifies that the crystal acts as a phonon cavity. A model based on rate equations for the level populations and the phonon occupation number accounts for these results.
