    Abstract

This book is a record of papers delivered at the colloquium Speaking the Past. Heritage, Discourse, and Publishing in the Digital Age on 23-24 October 2019 at University College Roosevelt, Middelburg, The Netherlands. The colloquium brought together an international group of interdisciplinary scholars to ask questions about heritage and its communication to various audiences across a range of media and institutional platforms. Questions like: Who decides when, how, and where heritage is studied, published, and consumed? How does the academy communicate local, regional, and global heritages to popular audiences? What is the role of ideology in heritage studies and heritage management? How should – or shouldn’t – governments and NGOs shape our images of the past? How is “heritage” itself defined – and by whom? Speaking the Past was organized in cooperation with the students of the third-year undergraduate research seminar “The Global Artefact” at University College Roosevelt. The colloquium paired students with invited speakers. The result was a dynamic, engaged discussion revolving around one of the most pressing issues of our day and an exciting example of international, undergraduate research.24
