Abstract
Although China had no diplomatic or trade relations with apartheid South Africa, in reality ties were much more complex. After a few years in which bilateral ties between the newly democratic South Africa remained on the backburner, in the late 2000s, and especially after the 2008 financial crisis, the two countries began drawing closer.
