Sociomarkers and information transmission

Abstract

The health sciences have seen an unprecedented development since the ‘molecular turn’: we are now able to obtain very fine-grained information about health and disease, by identifying and validating bio-markers at different ‘omic’ levels. In this paper, I argue for the need and suitability of a complementary way to study health and disease, notably identifying and tracing socio-markers of health and disease. I offer a conceptualization of ‘socio-markers’ that refers to their potential of tracing information transmission across bio-social processes of health and disease and then reflect on the normative implications of bio and socio-markers, distinguishing between good and bad uses of them.
