Abstract

The Song 'Ecce mundi Gaudia' in a songbook of the monastery of Wienhausen is situated in its context: it is a variation of a series of Chrismas Songs written by women belonging to the Devotio Moderna. The Wienhäuser song contains a Latin refrain which suggests that during the singing the nuns cradled an infant Jesus. The sources witnessing cradling and dancing in late-medieval convents and churches are discussed.
