Shakespeare's Literary Lives: The Author as Character in Fiction and Film

A monograph on Shakespeare as a literary character in fiction (including drama), and film. The scope ranges from appearances of Shakespeare’s ghost in the late seventeenth century to modern science fiction stories, by way of Wilde, Joyce, Tieck, Duval and Burgess, to mention just a few authors, and films such as Shakespeare in Love. The book also pays attention to continental examples, particularly from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It seeks to analyse uses of Shakespeare as a character in other people's fictions in terms of the underlying ideologies, in the widest sense of the term.
