Sanctions for Environmental Reasons

Abstract

This contribution discusses the concept of economic sanctions adopted in the context of multinational environmental agreements or States’ national environmental policies. It describes the differences between multilateral and unilateral environmental sanctions, provides a short summary of how such sanctions can be addressed under the WTOGATT agreement and identifies a number of issues for future research, such as extraterritoriality of environmental protection and security interests in environmental policies.
