Abstract
This thesis is structured in three parts. Part I and II comprise fundamental research of the magnetic properties of hematite and maghemite, respectively, essential to improve the quality of paleomagnetic interpretations of sedimentary rocks in particular. The main purpose is to develop diagnostic rock-magnetic parameters of a-Fe203 and y-Fe203 and to obtain more insight in the causes of their variation. Part III deals with thermally altered sediments associated with extensive subsurface coal fires in China. The combustionmetamorphic rocks are used to date paleo-coal fires magneto-stratigraphically and various applications of their magnetic properties are discussed.
