Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to the field of user modelling. It is explained how user data can be provided by the users themselves, observed by the system,or derived or inferred from existing user data. The chapter then provides an overview of user characteristics that can be modelled, including demographics, competencies, interests, personality traits, attitudes, goals and intentions, physical and cognitive functioning, affective state and user groups. Finally, the chapter zooms in on legal and ethical issues when working with user data, and principles for responsible, fair user modelling, such as transparency, explainability and user control, are discussed.
