Abstract
International human rights law calls for states to provide reparations to victims of atrocity. Such actions are also vital to achieving durable peace. This chapter discusses the best practices and main obstacles to providing reparation and ensuring victims’ rights. To do so effectively requires determining how to appropriately balance individual and collective reparations as well as whether to embrace a traditional or transformative framework for reparations. The chapter underscores that there is not one formula to provide reparations to victims of atrocity; each state must respond to the specific dynamics of its post-conflict environment.
