Abstract

The chapter presents a unified account of relative clauses of Santali, whose unmarked structure is the prenominal form of Externally Headed Relative Clauses. The prenominal form is an innovation evolved due to the change in the word order from SVO to SOV. The application of Noun Phrase Accessibility Hierarchy (Keenan and Comrie’s 1977) over various syntactic positions shows that the relativisation ceases when the relativized head is ablative object. Further, in the case of comitative object, an alternative relativisation strategy is adopted. Keeping in view the distribution mentioned above, we analyze the relative clauses with matching analysis as discussed in Lees (1961, 1963), Chomsky (1965), Sauerland (1998) and Bhatt (2002).
