We thank E. Brieskorn for drawing the attention of one of us to the work of C. T. C. Wall on discriminant bilinear forms, and explaining that M and .? should be vieweda s 4-manifolds with the same boundary. A helpful letter from D. Morrison corrected some errors and described his improvements (with H. Miranda-see [49] ) of some results of Nikulin; this is relevant for describing smoothing data (4.17a nd 6.5).
