Abstract
Product differentiation, monopolistic competition, open economies, heterogeneous firms and entrepreneurs, have replaced the concept of representative firm in the analysis of the structure and performance of markets. The size and degree of internationalization of a particular firm, as well as its innovation strategy, are jointly determined and evolve over time under the pace of the change in the dynamics of a hidden productivity parameter. This paper examines the recent evolution of Spanish manufacturing firms in terms of distribution of sizes and level of internationalization under the lens of the initial differences and time dynamics of the productivity parameter.
