Abstract
We investigate the feasibility of fast switching of the amplification of resonant phonons by an inverted medium via an additional magnetic field gradient. The active medium is the optically excited Zeeman-split E(2E) doublet of Cr3+ in ruby. It is found that the "quality" factor of the medium can be reduced to the point that the phonon amplification is completely suppressed.
