Abstract

Public Employee Stereotypes: What are they? Do they matter? This dissertation delves into the complex world of citizen perceptions regarding public employees. Across four thought-provoking chapters, Sheeling Neo navigates through cultural nuances and societal influences to uncover the truths behind commonly held beliefs. Unveiling Citizen Expectations and Stereotypes This dissertation embarks on a journey to discern the expectations citizens associate with public employees and the stereotypes they harbor. Through qualitative studies and large-scale surveys spanning multiple countries, intriguing insights emerge, challenging conventional wisdom and revealing the multifaceted nature of public perception. Exploring Impact on Behavior and Integrity This dissertation further delves into the effects of stereotypes on public employees’ task performance and ethical conduct. Contrary to expectations, the research unveils surprising findings, shedding light on the resilience of public servants amidst societal scrutiny and challenging prior assumptions about the influence of stereotypes on behavior. From debunking prevalent stereotypes to highlighting the influence of social and cultural contexts, this dissertation offers insights that reshape our understanding of public employees and their interactions with society.
