Abstract
First: do no harm. For many, this is a moral principle they would commit to without any doubt. In practice, however, things are rather less clear-cut. In this essay, I defend two theses: first, that doing harm is widespread in everyday life, and second, that for this very reason, we are morally obliged to reflect carefully upon the question when and why doing harm can be justified – and when it can’t.
