Abstract

Personality traits reflect how adolescents differ from each other in the way they think, behave, and feel in reaction to various situations. To some extent these differences in personality traits are stable over the life course. However, during adolescence, we can also see maturation toward a more adaptive personality. Moreover, differences in personality traits between adolescents become larger until middle adolescence. They also become more set and stable during adolescence due to an interplay of genetic and environmental factors. These individual differences have profound effects on the psychosocial functioning of adolescents and on relationships with parents and peers.
