Abstract
The implementation of the 'Wet toekomst pensioenen' (Future pensions act) requires pension funds not only a technical transition, but also a reassessment of their role in guiding participants through complex choices. For pension boards, this means steering toward quality, legitimacy, and transparency in choice guidance. Based on this responsibility, Montae & Partners, in collaboration with Utrecht University, has taken the initiative to conduct a large-scale study that brings science and practice together.
A large-scale quantitative study was conducted among participants from eleven pension funds. This research builds on earlier qualitative work by Strikwerda, Holleman & Hoeken (2024), in which pension participants shared their choices and underlying motivations in interviews. This revealed that pension choices are not solely determined by financial factors, but are also influenced by factors such as work-life balance, life expectancy, and job satisfaction.
