Abstract

This chapter discusses the development of the digitally enabled pharmaceutical workforce through education in light of the new digital environment for pharmaceutical care. Digital health education is essential and must be part of undergraduate education and continuing professional development. The authors propose the characteristics of professional practice, knowledge, skills, and competencies that will be required for the new roles in the digital era. They strongly believe that pharmaceutical care providers will not be taken over by machines any time soon but will evolve and adapt to their adjusted and new role descriptions. They suggest by whom and how digital health must be educated through various digital resources and interdisciplinary teams. Moreover, the fundamental competencies relevant to pharmaceutical care and digital health, including literacy, are discussed. Examples of newly developed digital health courses and pharmacy informatics to educate and train the future pharmaceutical workforce to embrace the impact of the technological revolution can be found in this chapter.
