Muddy waters: uncertainty issues in modelling the influence of bed sediments on water composition

Research output: Contribution to journalArticleAcademicpeer-review

Abstract

The primary aim of this research has been to quantify the role of bed sediments for the water composition or water quality at the catchment scale of small flowing surface waters by means of spatial and dynamic modelling. The following three problems were recognised and their effect on the model results have been examined in the context of a simple river system (the Biebrza River, Poland) and a complex system (the Langbroekerwetering, The Netherlands): (1) spatial and temporal variability of water and bed sediment composition; (2) uncertainties in the values of calibrated parameters; (3) differences in model structure.
