Abstract

The invention relates to the use of a MALDI mass spectrometer for the detection of natural analogues of small-molecule drugs in biological samples, wherein said MALDI mass spectrometer comprises a matrix comprising a matrix material comprising a porphyrin ring capable of holding an alkali metal ion in an out-of-plane position relative to the plane of the porphyrin ring, and wherein said matrix material has a molecular weight at least higher than that of a small-molecule drug.
