Abstract
Increased attention togood governance in (international) sport spurred (academic) efforts to evaluate the governance of different types of sport organisations. This chapter discusses the Sports Governance Observer, a tool for benchmarking good governance in international sport federations. It focuses on methodological challenges associated with measuring governance, that is, with the construction and use of governance indicators. Rather than providing a methodological blueprint, this chapter flags troublesome aspects of indicator construction and use. It suggests researchers proceed with caution when establishing validity, reliability, legitimacy, and functionality.
