Matthew and Yavne: Religious Authority in the Making?

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterAcademicpeer-review

Abstract

Historiographical analysis (comparative, textual, and discussion of archaeological data) of four polemics in Matthew 23 attests the emerging Rabbinic movement labelled as Yavne: phylacteries, tassels, chair of Moses, and being addressed as 'Rabbi'. However, contrary to the older view, this Rabbinic movement is not controlling synagogues or constituting a new 'orthodoxy'.
