Abstract
Data are becoming increasingly important in the humanities. In this one day course, intended for researchers and teachers in the humanities, you will learn the basics of statistical data analysis.
This hands-on training day will be given by professor Hugo Quené and research and education assistant Kirsten Schutter. They will start with core concepts: sample, data. Next, they will discuss the principles underlying statistical descriptions and analyses: variation, probability. You will learn how to describe statistical properties of data (centre, distribution), how to choose an appropriate statistical test, and how to perform a simple statistical tests.
Importantly, you will also learn what you can and cannot learn from a statistical test (significance, effect size, power). In addition you will learn how to discern meaningful patterns amidst random variation in data (correlation, regression). Throughout the course you will learn to interpret and assess statistical results. Moreover, you will start learning to use R software (and its companion Rstudio) to analyze data and visualize patterns.
We ask you to bring your own laptop to the workshop and install software on it before the training. You will receive an email with detailed information about this well before the training starts.
