Abstract
This article discusses how the notion of America as a reference culture can be researched in digitized newspapers using computational techniques that range from information retrieval to data visualizations. A reference culture is a social construction produced by receiving cultures within a system of cultural exchanges between nations. Reference cultures emerge in collective discussions within public discourse. The dynamics within public discourse inform us of the workings of reference cultures. For the analysis of public discourse, this article proposes the use of digitized newspapers.
