Abstract

Spontaneous options in child language are more transparent in information packaging and are as such potential windows on LF representations. We discuss five constructions that appear spontaneously in child Dutch and that are not part of the adult input: 1. Intermediate wh-elements (successive spell-out of hidden positions in a long distance wh-question); 2. Negative concord (spell-out of hidden positions in a NEG-chain); 3. Subextraction of a wh-element (violation of the Left Branch Condition); 4. Preposition stranding (Overgeneralization of P-stranding); 5. Insertion of dummy 'do' (evasion of V2nd).
