Landuse survey and rural landuse planning using satellite images and PC-based systems

Research output: Contribution to journalArticleAcademicpeer-review

Abstract

Provides an introduction into the possibilities and constraints of the use of remote sensing techniques in combination with the use of "low end' GIS hard and software. Argues that advanced and rather expensive systems are required to preprocess and classify the multispectral satellite images and to prepare a GIS digital database. However, the prepared data can very well be converted for use in inexpensive PC-based software packages. To demonstrate the capabilities of inexpensive packages for rural landuse planning, a landuse planning scenario is worked out for the northern part of the Kakamega District, Kenya. -Author
