Abstract
his article will show, through the work of two contemporary Spanish theatre
makers, the way in which performing arts, within the field of what Lehmann named as
‘postdramatic theatre’, focus on staging diverse corporealities, especially those deemed by
us as ‘unproductive bodies’. This ‘unproductive body’ will be framed under the general
assumptions of ‘disability’ and ‘dysfunctionality’. Its negative connotation will serve as
an umbrella term for several excluded and invisible beings, ranging from ageing bodies
to women outside of their reproductive cycle or wheelchair users. By employing Judith
Butler’s notion of precarity, its relation to the ideals of autonomy and its consideration
as an intrinsic quality of every human being, we will outline the formal and thematical
parameters under which these two authors, on the one hand, turn an ‘unproductive body’
into a ‘vulnerable body’ and, on the other hand, establish a point of relationality, of connection, with the audience.
