    Abstract

This paper addresses interpolation in Spanish verbal periphrases from the perspective
of dialectal variation between Spain and Spanish America, focusing on the periphrases estar + GER and ir a + INF in nineteenth century novels. Based on quantitative data extracted from two digital language corpora, GRADIAHISP and CORDE, it is shown that interpolation has a very low frequency in both periphrases. Regarding the linguistic material that is inserted, it is the subject that predominates. Moreover, the data reveal that usually only one word is inserted and that there is a tendency to insert only one word class. No relevant dialectal differences have been found for the use of interpolation, but there are significant differences between authors. Therefore, interpolation can be considered a stylistic feature.
