La expresión metaperiférica: narrativa ecuatoriana del siglo XX. José de la Cuadra, Jorge Icaza y Pablo Palacio.

The novel concept of ‘metaperiphery’ is based on the meaning of the Greek preposition μετά referring to ‘after’ 'and ‘behind’. In this sense you reach the metaperiphery after crossing the periphery. Spatially it is a kind of hinterland (back land) which lies behind the periphery and that allows from across the border, as if from above, a look back at the interaction of periphery and centre, which the observer has always left behind with the entry into the metaperiphery. The metaperiphery should not be subsumed under the periphery or as its edge zone, rather it has a very peculiar relationship both to the periphery and the centre. The texts of Ecuadorian narrators José de la Cuadra, Jorge Icaza and Pablo Palacio are seen as three basic initial displacements that describe the aesthetic expression of a metaperipheral communication in the first decades of the 20th century.
