    Abstract

Fine needle biopsies of the spleen for cytological examination were performed in 74 dogs with splenomegaly. No complications were observed after biopsies. Only 6.8 % (n = 5) of the slides were not diagnostic because of errors in splenic aspiration. The most common abnormalities observed were lymphoreticular hyperplasia (24.3 %), extramedullary hematopoesis (20.3 %), and malignant lymphoma (12.2 %). Uncommon histiocytic diseases as malignant histiocytosis (n = 3) and hemophagocytic syndrome (n = 1) were also diagnosed. The cytological examination of fine needle biopsies of the spleen seems to be a valuable tool in the diagnostic procedure primarily in the case of diffuse splenomegaly.
