Abstract

The Kinsey Scale of Sexual Behavior was first developed in 1948 to show how sexuality cannot be framed as purely heterosexual or homosexual but is instead a continuum based on a number of factors, including behavior, desire, and fantasy. Also known as the Heterosexual-Homosexual Rating Scale, Alfred Kinsey and colleagues created the seven-point spectrum (0 to 6) to account for research findings based on more than 11,000 in-depth interviews. Kinsey's research was quite radical for its time, as it formally acknowledged the range and variability of sexual orientation, showing that it is not fixed or static.
