Abstract
Islamic geometric patterns can be seen all over the Islamic world on numerous buildings and objects. Although geometric patterns as a decorative art predate the Islamic civilization, this form of art reached its peak during the Islamic civilization, especially during the Great Seljuk Empire. Despite thousands of surviving examples, medieval written sources on how and with what intention these patterns were made are extremely rare. With the intention of drawing attention to the subject and making these sources known, 5 manuscript sources will be shortly described and analyzed after a brief history of the development.
